Rune unveils RELIC brand of solar powered AI computing modules
Solar technology firm Rune has unveiled its new Renewable Energy Linked Intelligent Compute (RELIC) brand of modular computing systems.
Advertised as “the first drama free data center,” the new system installs directly into solar generation sites, according to company officials.
Solar plants can waste up to 20% of the energy they generate, which Rune representatives estimate would account for more than 50 TWh per year, in the U.S. alone. The new RELIC system taps into that electricity at its source, rather than needing to take it off the grip, skipping the meter and its associated fees entirely.
“Every solar plant is a latent data center. The power is already there, sitting idle while AI labs wait years for grid connections that may never come,” says William Layden, co-founder and CEO of Rune. “We built RELIC to close that gap with compute that’s online in days, powered by energy the grid was throwing away.”
Deploying Rune RELIC in the field
As part of the product’s launch, Rune has announced a new RELIC installation in Texas. The firm’s latest deployment lives on an existing 200 MW solar facility in the Lone Star State, and required no site modifications, grid work, or further construction.
Installation teams can put together RELIC systems in as little as an hour, according to Rune officials. Running natively in DC format, the installations eliminate AC conversion loss entirely, and thanks to cutting those infrastructure costs, the technology is both cheaper and non-disruptive, the company says.
Varun Palivela, co-founder and CTO of Rune, says all of these factors contribute to solving one of the biggest problems for AI data centers.
“AI’s power constraint isn’t generation, it’s resource allocation,” says Varun Palivela, co-founder and CTO of Rune. “The industry is retrofitting data centers designed for a different era rather than rethinking the architecture itself. We built an entirely new technology stack from the ground up, coupling compute directly to clean generation so AI can scale here on Earth.”
RELIC’s systems are able to bring AI graphic processing units (GPUs) online in as little as six weeks, using entirely renewable energy. The new product is launching with the announcement of a $40 million Series A led by Spark Capital, bringing its total funding to $53.5 million.

Rune is the fastest path to new capacity we have seen.”
