NineDot Energy cuts ribbon on Bronx energy storage site
Community battery storage developer NineDot Energy has energized its new 20 MW battery storage site in The Bronx’s Hunts Point neighborhood.
Now fully operational, the new installation will deliver nearly 20 MW of power to the Hunts Point community, NineDot officials say. That energy is enough to power about 20,000 homes during peak grid hours, bringing “significant benefits” to the community, which the company says has been suffering from environmental injustice.
“We’re honored to bring this battery storage site to the Hunts Point community,” says Adam Cohen, NineDot’s co-founder and CTO. “Hunts Point has historically been overburdened by high-emitting fossil fuels, and this battery storage facility marks an inflection point in improving the local environment and grid reliability.”
NineDot estimates that about 10,000 diesel trucks travel through the borough on a daily basis, adding to the environmental struggles The Bronx has faced in recent decades. The firm says that in 2023, the Hunts Point to Mott Haven area recorded asthma-related emergency room incidents at 2-3 times New York City’s average.
Providing for the Big Apple
Energy storage is an integral asset to New York City and its energy future, say officials from NineDot. The practice is crucial, not only in retiring more traditional power plants, but in providing resiliency to a grid that strains heavily during peak summer hours.
The company adds that during New York’s extreme heat wave in early July 2026, its fleet of community battery systems helped reduce stress on the grid.
“Battery energy storage is an important tool for modernizing New York’s electric grid and making it more resilient to extreme weather and high-stress conditions,” says David Sandbank, SVP of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). “This Hunts Point project demonstrates how the right policies, partners and programs can deliver benefits for communities throughout New York City and beyond.”
As of September 2026, NineDot Energy is on track to meet its goal of having 400 MW of battery storage either in operation, under construction, of in development by the end of the year.
The firm currently boasts a set of eleven projects operating at six different locations and totaling 39 MW across Staten Island and The Bronx. This makes it the largest operating battery fleet inside Con Edison’s New York City territory, and the firm adds it has 60 additional projects in development.
