Solis inverters can join virtual power plants via Derapi

Solis ESS products

Solis, the third largest solar string inverter manufacturer in the world, is now partnering with Derapi to better enable Solis solar energy storage customers to participate in virtual power plant (VPP) programs across the United States and Canada.

“The distributed energy landscape is ripe for innovation,” said James Qiao, General Manager of Solis. “Our collaboration with Derapi represents a significant step toward enabling homeowners to access programs in which they may not have the ability to in the past. This partnership aligns perfectly with our mission to deliver sustainable and efficient energy solutions globally.”

Derapi is a cloud-based API platform for Distributed Energy Resources. Its VPP solution is a comprehensive set of control, data, and customer enrollment APIs to dramatically cut development time, and maximize program enrollment.

“Smart energy storage inverters from Solis are an important part of the distributed energy ecosystem,” said Thomas Lee, Founder and President of Derapi. “Our partnership gives owners of Solis energy storage inverters access to market- and utility-based programs offered by VPP and Demand Response providers using the Derapi platform.”

These VPP programs can immediately add Solis to their supported vendor lists with no additional integration work.

Derapi and Solis partnership

  • Residential and business battery storage owners can easily join VPP programs for which they are eligible, streamlining the process of accessing energy savings.
  • Participants can access additional utility incentives and VPP revenue.
  • By joining VPP programs that dispatch distributed energy resources during times of stress on the grid, participants strengthen grid reliability and support the transition to a sustainable energy future.

Virtual Power Plants in the news

Sunrun reports that its VPP network has successfully supported a combined instantaneous peak of nearly 80 MW in power grids across the country in 2024 — a capacity greater than many traditional fossil-fuel power plants.

TriSMART is a key installer now offering the new sonnen/Solrite virtual power plant power purchase agreement (VPA), which will offer a solar panel and battery installation at no upfront cost. Instead Solrite finances the solar + sonnen batteries for a killer fixed rate that’s about a 30% discount for a customer’s energy usage compared with the local utility rates.

Clean Power Alliance (CPA), the largest Community Choice Aggregator in California, is pursuing its first virtual power plant (VPP) network, consisting of networked energy systems for ~300 CPA customers. CPA partnered with climate tech company Haven Energy to establish the VPP, using funds from California’s SGIP Residential Solar & Storage Equity program.
