Shoals opens battery manufacturing mega facility in northern Tennessee

Shoals battery solar panel manufacturing

Energy infrastructure firm Shoals Technologies Group Inc. has opened its new battery energy storage system (BESS) focused “mega facility” manufacturing plant in Portland, Tennessee.

Located about 40 miles north of downtown Nashville, the 638,000 square foot facility is backed by a $30 million investment, and consolidates three existing sites in the Volunteer State. The site has a total commitment of $80 million over five years, and will strengthen Shoals’ ability to help deliver both solar and energy storage eBOS components across the area.

“As demand for energy infrastructure continues to accelerate, this new Mega Facility allows Shoals to scale alongside our customers and meet the needs of a rapidly evolving energy landscape,” says Shoals CEO Brandon Moss. “By expanding our domestic manufacturing footprint and bringing increased capacity, we are strengthening the American energy supply chain and enabling faster, more efficient energy deployment.”

The company will manufacture infrastructure for solar, battery, and “mission-critical facilities” like data centers from the new plant. The investment will allow for resilient, domestically produced electrical infrastructure, as the sector grows across the U.S.

Planning for opening festivities

The facility’s centralized location will “significantly expand production capacity” for Shoals’ energy division, company representatives say. Touted as state of the art, the campus majorly increases automation in production and packaging, and will support the recently spiking demand in the American battery sector.

For the site’s grand opening on May 18, Shoals will host a ribbon cutting, and will be donating $20,000 to Hands of Hope. The donation will help provide meals to families in need across Sumner County, and supports the company’s ongoing commitment to supporting the local community, officials say.

The grand opening will also tie into Shoals’ 30th anniversary in 2026.

“Shoals’ 30th anniversary is a moment to celebrate both our company’s success and the people and communities who have helped make it possible,” Moss adds. “The opening of our new Mega Facility is an investment in the future of energy infrastructure and a commitment to the Portland community, creating jobs and supporting local families through our donation to Hands of Hope as we look ahead to our next chapter of growth.”
