Nightpeak Energy doubles battery site capacity with Bocanova 2

Nightpeak Energy Bocanova 2 ERCOT grid battery project

Nightpeak Energy is doubling the capacity at its Bocanova site in southeastern Texas, officials say, as the company reached commercial operation on its Bocanova 2 battery site Sept. 17.

The 150 MW project represents a doubling down of Nightpeak’s energy investment in the Lone Star State, company officials say. By doubling the battery capacity of the Bocanova site, Nightpeak is adding “significant flexibility” to Texas’s ERCOT grid, one of the fastest-growing electricity load centers in the U.S.

“We’re seeing large loads come to the grid at a pace and scale that is fundamentally changing how the power sector plans for new demand,” says Paris Hays, co-founder, chief development officer, and CEO of Nightpeak Energy. “Texas is at the forefront of that growth, and meeting it will require significant new infrastructure as well as resources that can respond quickly as conditions change.”

The project will allow ERCOT to further support AI data center buildout and other large electrical loads across the region. As the second phase of Nightpeak’s battery storage investment in Brazoria County, the now-300 MW battery site is strategically located near the Houston metropolitan area.

Bocanova 1, the project’s first 150 MW phase, began commercial operation in August 2025, the Oakland, California-based firm says. The second phase is the next step for Nightpeak and the 1 GW-plus portfolio it has developed and acquired since its founding in 2022, representatives add.

Adding battery potential in Texas

Texas has become a battery storage hotspot in recent years, with the ERCOT grid and its high number of data centers needing as much backup power as possible. As the wider U.S. grid continues to strain, Nightpeak is looking to get ahead of the curve.

“With 300 MW now operating at Bocanova, we’re putting that kind of flexibility to work in one of the most dynamic power markets in the country,” Hays adds. “We’re grateful to the City of Alvin, Brazoria County, and the local community for their support in bringing Bocanova to life.”

The new battery project will make use of Tesla’s Megapack 2 XL battery storage systems, the company says. The Elon Musk-led EV giant is planning a battery manufacturing expansion to Brookfield, Texas, about 80 miles away from Bocanova 2’s location, for later this year.

The Bocanova project will also operate under a long-term offtake agreement with an unnamed “investment-grade counterparty,” the company says. U.S. Bank provided the project’s tax equity, with MUFG Bank aiding with financing via a tax equity bridge loan and construction-to-term loan.
