SolarCity Joins the New York State Smart Grid Consortium

The New York State Smart Grid Consortium (NYSSGC), a public-private partnership devoted to statewide implementation of the smart grid, announced today that SolarCity, the nation’s number one rooftop solar power provider, has signed on as the Consortium’s newest Associate Member. In an attempt to engage the many different stakeholders that are modernizing New York’s electrical grid by improving reliability and resiliency, lowering long-term energy costs and working towards a cleaner energy system, the Consortium added an Associate Membership level last year.

SolarCity specializes in solar installation for homeowners, businesses, schools, non-profits and government organizations. The company serves thousands of consumers across 15 states with clean, affordable solar energy and employs more than 9,600 Americans. SolarCity has operations centers in Albany, Long Island, New Windsor and Westchester in New York, and more than 65 operations centers across the U.S. The company is currently building the largest solar panel manufacturing facility in the United States in Buffalo, New York.

“We are very excited to welcome SolarCity as a new Associate Member for the Consortium,” said James T. Gallagher, Executive Director of the New York State Smart Grid Consortium. “Solar power and distributed generation are fundamentally changing the way the grid operates, and given its leadership nationally and in New York, SolarCity epitomizes the type of new members that we are trying to attract to the Consortium.”

NYSSGC memberships provide organizations with access to industry leaders that are part of a unique partnership devoted to promoting broad statewide implementation of a safe, secure and reliable smart grid. As a non-profit organization that serves specifically to enhance the grid throughout New York State, the Consortium provides businesses with the platform, tools and resources to identify opportunities that show the most promise for broader smart grid technology deployment.

The Consortium brings together the world’s leading utilities, technology providers, policy makers and research institutions. Organizations that are interested in getting involved with the NYSSGC as a Full Member or Associate Member, can request additional information online.

We have a ton video interviews and additional content on our YouTube page. Recently we debuted Power Forward! -- a collaboration with BayWa r.e. to discuss higher level industry topics as well as best practices / trends for running a solar business today.

Our longer running side project is The Pitch -- in which we have awkward discussions with solar manufacturers and suppliers about their new technology and ideas so that you don't have to. We've discusses everything from residential rail-less deck attaching and home solar financing to large-scale energy storage value stacking and utility-driven new home solar + storage microgrids.

We also post our Project of the Year announcements there! Interviews with this year's winners will be up starting the week of Nov. 8. Head there and subscribe today to stay on top of all this extra stuff.
