Michigan city removes solar installation barriers, earns SolSmart designation
National solar energy program SolSmart has awarded the City of Dearborn with a Bronze designation for the city’s commitment to reducing barriers to solar energy deployment. Dearborn is the seventh city in Michigan to be recognized by SolSmart for solar energy programming and best practices.
“Climate change is hurting Dearborn families in every corner of our city,” says Dearborn Mayor Abdullah H. Hammoud. “Ensuring that our residents have the tools to face this generational challenge is a top priority for my administration. We are committed to protecting our community and creating a sustainable future for all through accessible options.”
Over 500 local governments nationwide have removed barriers to solar PV through SolSmart and other DOE Energy Ready programs. The City of Dearborn offers a national example of the power of local governments to spur clean energy and address climate change.
SolSmart initiatives in Dearborn
The city of Dearborn provides information and resources on solar energy for homes and businesses through its website, with support from its Department of Public Health (DPH) in coordination with city planners and inspectors from the Department of Economic Development.
Residents and businesses interested in solar installations are encouraged to visit Dearborn.gov/Solar for permitting and inspection guides, financing and tax incentives, and estimates for their property’s solar potential.
Samir Deshpande, Dearborn’s inaugural environmental health manager, led the effort: “This designation reflects our dedication to expanding solar energy access for all. By clarifying and explaining requirements, we’re making it faster, easier, and more affordable to install solar energy systems while reducing the burden on City staff responsible for evaluating projects for safety and compliance.”
Dearborn and DTE Energy
In addition to rolling out solar energy education programs, the city recently signed a solar power purchase agreement with DTE Energy committing city operations to 100 percent wind and solar energy use by 2026. Dearborn’s commitment to environmental sustainability has been recognized through a 2023 silver certification by Michigan Green Communities and 2024 Mayors’ Climate Protection Award by the U.S. Conference of Mayors.
