ABB acquires smart energy tech company Lumin

ABB is acquiring smart energy management tech company Lumin to expand its home energy management capabilities in U.S. residential. This comes after ABB’s strategic minority investment in 2023. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
This acquisition supports ABB’s growth strategy in the North American residential market, where electrification and renewable energy are driving increased demand. ABB has been smartening up its product line — the ReliaHome — for several years, most recently with a new Load Center. With Lumin’s hardware and cloud-based software capabilities — including a mobile app for homeowners and installers — ABB can provide smarter home energy solutions.
“We’re excited to welcome Lumin into the ABB family at a time when electrification across North America is a transformative megatrend,” said Mike Mustapha, President of ABB Electrification’s Smart Buildings Division.
Lumin smart energy products
Lumin launched as a pioneer in the “smart circuit” space in 2016, and now offers one of the most well known smart electric panels, shown below.
The Lumin Smart Panel dynamically manages loads to stay below the customer’s power threshold. It enables longer battery life during a power outage and intelligently responds to user preferences and environmental conditions. Features include setting circuit schedules and limits based on time-of-use rates, net metering policies, and demand charges to optimize energy use and save homeowners money on utility bills.
Sunnova integrated the Lumin Smart Panel and its intelligent energy management platform into the Sunnova Adaptive Home offering last year. Lumin’s flexible platform allows for the seamless integration of any brand of load centers, battery systems and generators.
The Lumin Smart Panel is now integrated with the Tesla Powerwall family of home batteries to read and respond to state of charge. This includes Powerwall+, Powerwall 2 and Powerwall 3 batteries. In addition to the Tesla Powerwall, the Lumin Smart Panel also reads state of charge for Enphase IQ, and SolarEdge Home batteries, covering approximately 70% of the solar-plus-storage market.
It also provides deep insights into behind-the-meter consumption and dynamically manages energy loads – such as electric vehicle chargers, hot tubs and heat pumps — paving the way for more efficient and sustainable communities.
“Joining ABB is an exciting step for Lumin. We’re fully aligned with ABB’s mission to drive innovation, sustainability, and smarter energy solutions. This is an incredible opportunity to scale our platform and make energy management even more accessible to homeowners across North America,” said Alex Bazhinov, Lumin’s Founder and President. “As part of ABB, we’ll help empower homeowners to reduce energy waste, integrate renewable energy sources, and create more sustainable, efficient communities.”
