Peninsula Clean Energy (PCE) and Silicon Valley Clean Energy (SVCE) are jointly launching a demand flexibility effort, headlined by a contract with Mountain View-based Lunar Energy for its Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS) that will support a range of new programs.

Lunar Energy’s Gridshare DERMS platform connects, controls and optimizes devices located at customer sites, and both agencies will use it as a foundation of their smart energy programs. PCE and SVCE aim to aggregate up to 25 megawatts of dispatchable capacity over the next five years from customer-sited resources via numerous programs and initiatives.

“Lunar’s Gridshare DERMS platform will underpin PCE’s strategy to expand electrification and clean power, while keeping the grid reliable for customers,” Peninsula Clean Energy CEO Shawn Marshall said.

Lunar’s Gridshare platform will enable customers to draw new benefits from their devices and will deliver opportunities for PCE and SVCE to capture new value streams – earning direct bill savings, while also helping to reduce grid costs and harmful emissions.

“Leveraging the smart, electric technologies that our customers are already adopting showcases a major benefit of electrification – going electric can also make our grid smarter. We are excited to offer these services, which are part of the many solutions needed to achieve a 100 percent clean grid statewide,” Monica Padilla, SVCE CEO said.

Examples of flexible customer devices include battery energy storage, electric heat pump water heating, smart thermostats and building energy management systems at commercial facilities. To maximize reliability and affordability, particularly in the context of an increasingly renewable and intermittent generation mix, it is essential to align flexible loads with hours when electricity is cleanest, most abundant and at its lowest cost.

“We developed Gridshare to deliver the benefits of clean and affordable energy to everyone. Electrifying every energy resource in the home is half of the solution, but the other half is connecting and optimizing these distributed energy resources to bring down costs and increase reliability for everyone on the grid — the core benefit of the Gridshare platform. As both a customer and supplier to both PCE and SVCE, I’m personally thrilled that the Gridshare platform will help achieve their goals.” Kunal Girotra, Lunar Energy Founder and CEO said.

New dispatchable capacity will be enabled by integrating devices installed under existing programs, such as PCE’s Solar + Battery Savings and GovPV programs and the SVCE Home Rebates and Multifamily Retrofits programs. In addition, PCE and SVCE will look for opportunities to develop new demand flexibility solutions that are enabled by the DERMS platform as new programs are launched.
