Peninsula Clean Energy, Leeward Renewable sign 15-year PPA for California’s Chaparral Solar Facility

Leeward Renewable Energy and Peninsula Clean Energy have entered into a 15-year solar-plus-storage PPA involving Leeward’s 102 MW Chaparral Solar Facility (Chaparral) in Kern County, California. Peninsula Clean Energy will also purchase energy and capacity from Chaparral’s 52 MW/208 MWh battery storage system, facilitating the transition to a cleaner and more reliable power grid.

Peninsula Clean Energy’s board of directors on September 25 approved the PPA, which is the organization’s first to involve a solar-plus-storage project. By advancing the Chaparral project, Peninsula Clean Energy will make another step toward its goal of supplying customers throughout San Mateo County and Los Banos with 100 percent renewable energy.

“Leeward is very excited to build on its partnership with Peninsula Clean Energy in providing affordable and reliable renewable energy to its customers as well as helping the agency achieve its ambitious energy goals,” said Leeward’s Senior Vice President of Development, Kathryn Arbeit. “This agreement represents another critical step forward in the region’s transition to dispatchable clean energy and also showcases Leeward’s expanding solar and energy storage capabilities and growing footprint in California’s Antelope Valley.”

“While we continue to elevate the amount of solar, wind, geothermal and other clean generation, the storage capacity of this agreement is vital to ensuring we are getting closer to our ultimate goal of providing 24/7 emission-free renewable power to our customers by 2025,” Peninsula Clean Energy CEO Jan Pepper said.

Construction begins in December 2021 and the project is expected to begin delivering energy to Peninsula Clean Energy by December 2023. Leeward will own and operate the facility.

We have a ton video interviews and additional content on our YouTube page. Recently we debuted Power Forward! -- a collaboration with BayWa r.e. to discuss higher level industry topics as well as best practices / trends for running a solar business today.

Our longer running side project is The Pitch -- in which we have awkward discussions with solar manufacturers and suppliers about their new technology and ideas so that you don't have to. We've discusses everything from residential rail-less deck attaching and home solar financing to large-scale energy storage value stacking and utility-driven new home solar + storage microgrids.

We also post our Project of the Year announcements there! Interviews with this year's winners will be up starting the week of Nov. 8. Head there and subscribe today to stay on top of all this extra stuff.
