GAF Energy’s nailable Timberline Solar shingle is now 23% more powerful

GAF Energy, the solar business unit of renowned roofing company GAF, is launching the 2.0 version of their Timberline Solar shingle, which sports a 23% increase in Watts per shingle. The Timberline Solar ES 2 is latest version of the world’s first nailable solar shingle first introduced in 2022, and there more notable updates that should please solar installers and roofers on the installation end of things.
“Three years ago, we transformed the solar industry with Timberline Solar. Today, we’re raising the bar again,” said Martin DeBono, President of GAF Energy. “Timberline Solar ES 2 represents everything we’ve learned about solar roofing, enhanced by extensive feedback from contractors and homeowners. It’s an innovation that delivers a solar shingle that is more powerful, even easier to install, and more versatile than ever before.”
And yes, Timberline Solar ES 2 is compatibility with the complete GAF Timberline shingle collection.
Timberline Solar ES 2 improvements
- 57 watts of power per shingle, a 23% increase in energy generation
- More area than a traditional asphalt shingle to speed installation
- Enhanced StrikeZone for improved installation efficiency
- Refined aesthetics with smaller transition boxes and simplified wiring
The Timberline Solar ES 2 boasts a depth of less than a quarter inch and integrates with traditional GAF shingles. Timberline Solar meets a host of third-party safety standards covering both roofing and solar. The product is developed and assembled at the company’s manufacturing facilities in Georgetown, Texas, and San Jose, California.
With its two Timberline Solar manufacturing facilities, GAF Energy had the capacity to produce 300 MW annually. GAF Energy claims that figure would rank them the largest producer of solar roofing in the world.

GAF Energy updates
Last we heard, the OG Timberline Solar shingle was still gaining support around the country.
It was approved for installation by the Sterling Ranch master-planned community in Colorado. The availability of Timberline Solar will help Sterling Ranch reach its sustainability targets, including the goal of achieving 100% renewable electricity by 2030.
Timberline Solar has been approved by Miami-Dade County’s Product Control Sector after an extensive multi-month review and evaluation. This is notable because Miami-Dade has stringent requirements for rooftop mounting, and GAF says Timberline is the only solar roofing system to earn its approval to this point.
