EV charger updates: Smappee, Wallbox, Sinexcel showcase smarts, solar connections

Smappee is among the first “smart circuit” tech providers, and that background is put to good use in their new EV Wall. We got an up close look at the EV Wall at Intersolar & Energy Storage North America in San Diego.
Users can set peak demand preferences, and Smappee’s AI will smartly manage charging to avoid the high-cost charging periods and side-step penalties from the utility companies. The EV Wall’s advanced overload protection also helps avoid service upgrades. Precise revenue-grade energy monitoring balances the energy use of your vehicle and building, and the charging system always works without tripping the upstream breakers.
The EV Wall can also charge directly from solar PV to maximize self-consumption.
Wallbox Quasar 2 ready to pre-order
Wallbox’s newest bi-directional charger, Quasar 2, is now available to pre-order for eligible Kia EV9 owners and lessees. The Quasar 2 is a next-generation bi-directional DC charger from Wallbox that, along with the Wallbox Power Recovery Unit, can enable eligible Kia EV9 drivers to power areas of their homes during power outages (if allowed in the jurisdiction).
Wallbox says the Quasar 2 and the Power Recovery Unit can provide backup power for up to three days, based on an average 25 kWh daily usage and 99.8 kWh battery with 100% charge at start. The Quasar 2 features up to 12 kW of power for fast EV charging and discharging.
It also enables solar charging for the EV. Solar charging requires purchase and installation of the Wallbox Power Meter for Energy Management Solutions
Wallbox Quasar 2 availability
Pre-ordering availability for the Quasar 2 and Power Recovery Unit will be initially limited to individuals who reside in California, Texas, Florida, New York, Washington, New Jersey, or Illinois, with a nationwide rollout to follow.
Ability to install may be subject to applicable permits and permissions, including utility approval. Installation of Quasar 2 and the Power Recovery Unit must be scheduled separately through Wallbox’s official installation provider, COIL Inc., or another certified third-party installation provider.
The installation of Quasar 2 and Power Recovery Unit is recommended to be handledby COIL, to ensure high standards of security, quality in electrical installation and provide all of the available functionalities. Customers will have the option to install through COIL, which will include an installation assessment, scheduling and the actual installation.
The Quasar 2 charger alone cannot power home in the event of electrical grid blackout. Quasar 2 and Power Recovery Unit may not be compatible with all devices and homes. The Backup Power feature can be used until a 20% battery state of charge. Quasar 2 and Power Recovery Unit must be in a residential garage or carport with shade and ventilation.
Sinexcel showcases Solar-Storage-Charging Solutions
Sinexcel showed off two key storage products at Intersolar: the 160kW Modular Bi-directional Storage Inverter and the SES-90K Pre-engineered All-in-one Outdoor BESS Cabinet, both designed to optimize energy usage, enhance energy resilience, and drive cost savings for C&I applications.
SINEXCEL’s Solar-Storage-Charging Solution directly converts both battery electricity and solar power into the current needed for charging, which the company says provides a 4% boost in efficiency. At the core of this solution lies the Tianji Architecture, a distributed modular DC bus with a standardized platform. This architecture ensures zero power consumption, zero on-site maintenance, zero curtailment, and zero grid connection, zero overload.
The Sinexcel 160kW Modular Bi-directional Storage Inverter is IP66 rated, and built to withstand extreme conditions like islands and deserts, and supports flexible configurations, including flat, vertical, or wall-mounted installations. The inverter offers a flexible 850–1500Vdc range, accommodating various battery types. The 160kW inverter can handle overloads up to 1.5 times for 10 seconds and responds flexibly to FFR, FCR, and FCAS services. Its compatibility with both air-cooled and liquid-cooled batteries ensures efficient heat dissipation. With a 1.6MW capacity from 10 units in parallel, it’s an ideal solution for both grid-connected and isolated energy systems.
