What’s going on with SolarEdge Home Battery?

What’s going with SolarEdge batteries, exactly? Glad you asked. 1) Yes, SolarEdge is still selling batteries for residential and C&I projects. 2) SolarEdge Home Battery ‘USA Edition’ is now available, which is manufactured in the United States and contributes to a system’s domestic content percentage. See below for further explanation on both points.

SolarEdge closes Energy Storage Division, confusion ensues

Just before Thanksgiving, SolarEdge announced the closure of its Energy Storage Division: “This decision will result in a workforce reduction of approximately 500 employees, most of whom are in South Korea. The expected quarterly operating expenses savings due to the closure are approximately $7.5 million with the full run rate expected to be achieved by the second half of 2025. The Company intends to sell the assets related to the storage division activities including its manufacturing facilities for battery cells and packs. This does not impact the solar business sale of batteries for residential and C&I markets.”

Enough people apparently glossed over that last line to cause SolarEdge to send clarifying communication to note that the closure “has no impact whatsoever on our residential and C&I solar-attached storage solutions.”

“This includes both our current offering and our future development plans and roadmap. SolarEdge will continue to develop, produce, and sell all residential and C&I storage solutions. The affected division referred to in the announcement focused solely on the manufacturing of lithium-ion battery cells for BESS solutions in the utility segment.”

So …

  • What’s continuing: All SolarEdge residential and commercial battery manufacturing
  • What’s closing: SolarEdge non-solar-attached utility battery cell manufacturing division

OK, that’s settled.

SolarEdge is now selling Home Battery ‘USA Edition’

SolarEdge’s residential energy storage business is not only continuing but expanding its local manufacturing capabilities in the United States, adding significant domestic production capacity.

“By expanding our U.S. manufacturing capabilities to include energy storage, SolarEdge is delivering on our commitment to provide installers with a domestically produced battery,” said Bertrand Vandewiele, General Manager of SolarEdge North America. “This portfolio approach not only helps our customers maximize available incentives but also strengthens the reliability of their supply chain with consistent access to U.S. products.”

This new SolarEdge Home Battery ‘USA Edition’ is now shipping, and the company says it is “designed to qualify for the Domestic Content Bonus Credit.” (Reminder: The U.S. Department of Treasury and the IRS have not yet issued proposed or final regulations.) The SolarEdge Home Battery ‘USA Edition’ provides 9.7kWh of storage capacity and features SolarEdge ONE, the company’s energy optimization system.
