Power Up Connect, Dominion Energy cut ribbon on zero-emission MBESS

Power Up Connect and Dominion Energy officials cutting the ribbon on the new Green Grid 90kWh MBESS system.

Baltimore-based manufacturer Power Up Connect has unveiled its Green Grid 90 kWh Mobile Battery Energy Storage System (MBESS), promising a renewable energy alternative to traditional diesel generators.

The world’s first International Fire Code-compliant MBESS, the system boasts a UL 9540/9540A safety certification, the only generator to achieve such a grade. The trailer-mounted Green Grid 90 kWh also sports integrated solar panels, allowing for “cleaner, quieter, and more resilient” energy output, while maintaining zero emissions.

The ceremony showcased the product’s compliance on safety standards including fire code compliance for a mobile lithium-ion battery system. Power Up Connect engineered the new MBESS with rapid deployment and emergency applications in mind.

“The ribbon cutting represents more than a product launch—it reflects years of collaboration, testing, and real-world problem solving,” says Scott Calhoun, president of Power Up Connect. “Utilities have long relied on diesel generators for mobile power. This deployment proves there is now a cleaner, safer, and utility-ready solution available today.”

Unveiling the new MBESS

The Power Up Connect team designed the firm’s new MBESS to deliver 208/120V three-phase electricity, while avoiding fuel logistics. In addition to utilizing renewable energy, the system also avoids noise pollution and is available for applications including emergency response, construction, and EV charging. The system’s deployment marks a turning point in the industry and provides a scalable alternative to traditional diesel fuel generators, the team says.

The new system also serves as a long-term recovery option for disaster-affected areas, powering construction equipment and tools to quicken the process. Should an area’s main power grid fail to come online, the Green Grid 90kWh can work as a micro grid for a small area, according to the company.

“By storing energy, these systems help maintain energy resilience,” says the company. “They can be charged during non-emergency periods and be ready to supply power during disasters, reducing the impact of power disruptions.”

Power Up Connect partnered with Dominion Energy for the ribbon-cutting ceremony on the new product, hosting the ceremony at the power provider’s Safety and Training Center in Chesterfield, Virginia. However, the Power Up Connect team stressed that the new MBESS will be produced in Baltimore, underscoring its “commitment to domestic manufacturing” and innovation in renewable energy.

“Dominion Energy’s participation underscores how mobile battery storage can support utility operations,” says the team, “while reducing emissions, eliminating fuel dependency, and improving reliability for temporary and off-grid power needs.”
