Sunrun and Tesla Electric team up on fixed-rate solar and storage plan for Texas

Battery storage companies all have their sights on Texas, and are finding new partnerships and deal structures to offer homeowners in the Lone Star State. Sonnen and Solrite‘s virtual power plant power purchase agreement (VPA) is one example. This week, arguably the two biggest names in residential solar and storage are promoting a streamlined way for Texans to go solar, store energy, simplify their monthly electricity bills, and protect against the grid’s growing reliability issues.
Sunrun has partnered with Tesla Electric to launch a new all-in-one electricity plan for homeowners enrolled in Sunrun Flex. Exclusively available in Texas’ competitive electricity market, the Tesla Electric + Sunrun Flex plan bundles rooftop solar, Tesla Powerwall battery storage, and a flat-rate electricity plan tailored to maximize value for solar households.
“This partnership creates the most compelling and comprehensive home energy solution on the market for Texas consumers,” said Mary Powell, CEO of Sunrun. “We’ve put customers first by combining the resources, technology, and knowledge of two companies that know energy best.”
Designed for solar + storage — not just another electricity plan
The Sunrun Flex plan launched in May, and is designed to protect against increased energy use from life events, such as growing a family or purchasing an electric vehicle, but also offer credit for decreased energy usage.
With Flex, Sunrun fills in the gap to fit what a family needs now and in the future. Sunrun Flex optimizes the flow of solar energy to provide the most benefit to the customer, whether that’s immediate self consumption, storing it in the battery for later use, or exporting it to the grid so that the customer can get utility credits.
With more than 100 retail electricity providers in Texas, choosing a plan that works well with solar and battery storage has often been a guessing game for customers. Most rate structures don’t align with rooftop generation patterns or offer competitive net metering. The new Sunrun-Tesla offering aims to fix that.
Under the plan, customers get a predictable flat electricity rate along with one of the state’s most competitive sellback rates for excess solar energy exported to the grid. The Powerwall battery comes pre-programmed to store solar when it’s most cost-effective and discharge during outages or peak pricing, while Tesla manages the rate optimization and battery coordination in the background.
Other customer benefits include:
- 24/7 performance monitoring and maintenance through Sunrun’s Flex subscription
- Grid support participation through Tesla’s Virtual Power Plant
- Rollover credits for unused electricity
- Coordinated customer service across Tesla and Sunrun
Grid-ready resilience, designed for Texas
The partnership arrives as Texans continue to face heat waves, rolling outages, and an increasingly stressed power grid. The Flex system’s backup capabilities, powered by Tesla’s Powerwall, are a key selling point.
“With Tesla Electric, we’re building energy plans that unlock the full value of home solar and storage,” said Colby Hastings, Director of Residential Energy at Tesla. “This collaboration with Sunrun brings all of that together in one smart, simple offering for Texans.”
The Tesla Electric + Sunrun Flex plan is now available to Sunrun Flex customers in areas of Texas where residents have electric choice.
