Via Charge SolarThe Canada Greener Homes Loan, administered through the Canada Greener Homes Initiative, offers interest-free financing of up to $40,000 for eligible homeowners undertaking energy efficiency upgrades. The loan program has supported a wide range of retrofits, including insulation, windows, heat pumps, solar PV, and battery storage. Homeowners repay the interest-free loan over 10 years.

Despite various challenges with the program, it has provided interest-free financing for over 115,000 households in Canada since late 2022. But that could change if funding is not added in 2026.

 Remaining Greener Homes Loan Funding

Through an Access to Information (ATIP) request, Charge Solar obtained specific and recent data from the CMHC. The ATIP response included the following data which was effective June 17, 2025:

  • Total loan commitments to date: $2.78 billion
  • Remaining capital: $444.47 million; this means 26% of the recent $600m top-up has already been consumed
  • Loans committed to date: 115,751
  • Recent run-rate (last 3 months): ~3,018 loans/month
  • CMHC’s forecasted pace: 3,500 loans/month
  • Remaining duration: 5 months (November 2025)

Why remaining program duration matters

This is a first‑come, first‑served program: once the fund hits zero, applications will be closed.  It is possible that additional funding is provided will be provided in the upcoming budget bill, but this is not guaranteed, and the federal government is actively looking to cut spending.

Charge Solar’s recommended actions for Solar Installers

  • Educate your sales team and prospective customers about the loan’s impending expiry.
  • Ensure sales documents, including your sales proposal and installation contract, do not infer the loan is guaranteed.
  • Encourage prospective customers to apply for the loan as soon as possible.
  • Encourage prospective customers to schedule pre-retrofit audits as this can still be a primary cause of delay for funding approval in some regions.
