This partnership powers portable off-grid 5G networks with solar and batteries

New Use Energy Solutions portable 5G

When the grid goes down—or isn’t there to begin with—communication becomes critical and often elusive. That’s the challenge Khasm Labs and New Use Energy Solutions (NUE) are tackling head-on through a new partnership that pairs private 5G networking with rugged, mobile solar + storage systems.

Khasm Labs, the developer of the KEEN (Khasm Enterprise Edge Network) platform—a fully off-grid private 5G network—has joined forces with NUE, a provider of portable, battery-based power systems already tested in disaster zones and conflict areas. Together, they’re offering a transportable communications solution for remote environments, with real-time connectivity and zero dependence on fixed infrastructure.

“This is more than a technology partnership — it’s a mission-aligned collaboration,” said Jim Brisimitzis, Founder and General Partner at Khasm Labs. “Together with New Use Energy, we’re delivering a field-proven system that brings real-time connectivity and power to where it’s needed most — whether it’s the battlefield, a wildfire response zone, or a remote industrial site.”

Off-grid 5G field demo

The partnership follows a successful field demonstration during a recent military exercise, where KEEN, powered entirely by NUE’s solar-charged battery packs, maintained reliable 5G performance and real-time data transfer. The setup was untethered, untetherable—and it worked.

New Use Energy’s tech is no stranger to high-stakes deployments. Its modular energy systems have supported electronic warfare efforts in Ukraine and been deployed to restore connectivity in post-disaster scenarios. The company emphasizes clean waveform generation and low thermal signatures—key features for running sensitive communications equipment without drawing attention.

“We don’t just each build technology. Together we build tools that can help save lives or complete a mission,” said Paul Shmotolokha, CEO of New Use Energy.

What hasn’t worked until now?

The two companies first connected through the Crucible NavalX Challenge and quickly aligned around a shared need for speed, resilience, and mobility in communications infrastructure—whether for defense, disaster response, or remote industry.

Their joint solution addresses several tactical and logistical pain points:

  • Power and connectivity in one: A fully off-grid 5G network that’s deployable in minutes.
  • Stealthy battery operation: Low-profile, low-noise, and optimized for communications hardware.
  • Built for real conditions: Tested and validated in field environments where traditional infrastructure doesn’t reach—or can’t survive.

“As a retired first responder, I’ve seen how limited connectivity can slow down help when seconds matter,” said Scott Waller, CTO of Khasm Labs. “This solution ensures that frontline teams never have to operate in silence. We’re delivering something that doesn’t just work — it saves lives.”

The KEEN + NUE solution is already being considered for future deployments across a wide range of sectors—from emergency response and homeland security to remote energy installations and even temporary event infrastructure.

While built with tactical use in mind, the broader vision is civilian-ready: portable, resilient power + communications hubs that can keep communities connected when traditional systems go dark.
